LION | Fun on the Run Required Rank Adventure

The Fun on the Run adventure is a required activity for Lion Cub Scouts (Kindergarten). It focuses on learning proper habits for physical fitness, nutrition, and taking care of their bodies.


Activities with an asterisks (*) are found via the QR codes in the Lion Adult Partner Handbook and Lion Cub Scout Handbook.


Requirement 1 | Food Groups

Identify the five different food groups.

Choose one of the following activities:

Activity | MyPlate*

There are several food group activities suggested in the guide however it would be easy to combine them all into one fun activity.

  • Snack Time* – Adult partners bring in an assigned food for the den to share.
  • That Food Is In The Wrong Group* – Introduce USDA MyPlate food groups then complete the coloring/ activity page in the Lion Handbook.
  • What Food Group Do I Belong To?* This is a sorting relay that scouts play with their adult partner against the other duos. It is low prep but you will need 5 boxes, a timer, and an 3 toy foods from all the food groups listed in the USDA MyPlate guidelines.

Requirement 2 | Hand Washing

Practice hand washing. Point out when you should wash your hands.

Choose one of the following activities:

Activity | Washing Your Hands Activities*

Though listed as three activities they are all very similar and can be done as part of the same activity:

  1. Play with bubbles,
  2. Discuss when to wash your hands,
  3. Demonstrate and practice washing your hands for the duration of the Happy Birthday song,
  4. Complete the page in the Lion Handbook.
  • Bubbles Good Clean Fun – Use playing with bubbles as a way to introduce when you should wash your hands and then practice it.
  • Happy Birthday Clean Hands – A tip that says, when you’re washing your hands do it for the duration of the Happy Birthday song.
  • Steps To Washing Your Hands – Same as before.

Requirement 3 | Activity

Be active for 20 minutes.

Choose one of the following activities:

Activity | 20 Minute Active Activities*

  • It’s Time For Lions To Dance – 20 minute dance party!
  • Lion Freeze Tag – Freeze tag for 20 minutes.
  • Lion Says – Play Simon Says (but for say ‘Lion Says’) for 20 minutes.

Requirement 4 | Rest

Practice methods that help you rest.

Choose one of the following activities:

Activity | Animals Sleep Just Like Me*

Understand the difference between nocturnal and diurnal animals, discuss the importance of sleep, and complete the page in the Lion Handbook.

Consider a story time with a book like Out of Sight Till Tonight! All About Nocturnal Animals.

  • This activity promotes bedtimes routines.
    • This activity also meets Requirement 2 of the I’ll Do It Myself Elective Adventure  

Activity | Music Can Soothe The Savage Beast*

Reflect on upbeat, dramatic, and soothing music then play the soothing music while everyone relaxes.

Activity | What Time Is Bedtime?*

Discuss how regular routines are good for our bodies and use the Lion Handbook page from the I’ll Do it Myself to create a bedtime routine (p. 45).

  • This activity also meets Requirement 2 of the I’ll Do It Myself Elective Adventure 

Completing the Fun on the Run Adventure

Congratulations you completed the Fun on the Run adventure! Don’t forget to mark off the Adventure on the Trail Map and Adventure Tracking page. If you did not complete this with your den tell your den leader so they can mark the completion in Scoutbook and your Lion will be awarded his or her adventure belt loop soon after. Well done, off to the next adventure!
